Do You Know?


  • For the first time in the country, water supply, environmental sanitation, catchment area protection and health & Hygiene awareness components were integrated with the water supply component in the rural water supply and sanitation sector.
  • Under the Swajal project, over the last 7 years, the rural communities were involved in the financial management to the tune of Rs 58.168 crores for constructing 1116 rural water schemes spread over 857 villages as against the target of 650 villages. 
  • Total 3.96 lakh population and 61980 households of Uttaranchal have been covered under the project.
  • 822 Village Water & Sanitation Committees have been formed in 857 villages and 8055 active members were elected by consensus.
  • The representation of women is 3262 (40.5%) and SC/ST is 1551 (20%) in 822 Village Water and Sanitation Committee of 857 Swajal villages.
  • The community has contributed Rs. 84.45 Lakh in cash and Rs. 424.63 lakh in form of labour amounting to Rs. 509.08 lakh for construction of the water supply & environmental sanitation schemes in 857 villages in Uttaranchal.
  • The Village Water and Sanitation Committee (VWSC) has procured quality material i.e. pipe, cement, steel, chlorinator etc for the construction of   water supply schemes in 857 village from the market with reasonable rates worth Rs. 35.587 crores.
  • The House Hold Sanitary Latrine coverage has increased from 10% (pre-Swajal) to 60% (after Swajal) in 857 project villages in Uttaranchal.
  • The community has chosen manageable water supply technologies from available options and actively participated in planning, Implementation and O&M system of the project village.
  • In 857 project villages the communities have collected Rs. 111.69 lakhs for Operation & Maintenance of the schemes. Out of this Rs. 28.64 lakhs have been spent on minor repairs, purchase of bleaching powder and wages for village maintenance worker etc.  The balance amount has been deposited for major damages to the schemes in future.
  • 112 Village Water and Sanitations Committees (VWSCs) have insured their water supply schemes for three (3) years and have paid their share of Rs. 4.41 lakhs to the Insurance Company.
  • In 857 Swajal villages 1045 women self help groups have been formed. These groups have collected Rs. 1.01 crores and Rs. 1.51 crores have been transacted in form of Inter loaning.
  • Under Swajal project 33.14 lakh mandays of labour (skilled and unskilled) has been generated at the village level worth Rs. 23.20 crores for the construction of water supply schemes.
  • Under Swajal project in Uttaranchal 57 Non Government Organizations (Support Organisation) with the help of 5142 workers (1285 women) facilitated the project activities in the targetted villages.
  • Under Swajal project 20411 participants were trained on Technical, Financial and Community Development aspects for 397090 participant days at Village, District and State level trainings.
